Summer arrived on June 21st but long before the solstice the sun was in full effect. Every day, especially during the summer months, we are urged to wear sunscreen and protect our skin at all costs. According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, “sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race. In fact, it is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.” Sometimes, no matter how much SPF we apply, we may end up with a sunburn. So, you may be asking yourself, “will my sunburn affect my massage?” The short answer is no but here a few facts on dealing with a sunburn during your massage appointment.
1. If your sunburn isn’t painful to the touch than the massage will be very beneficial. The aromatherapy and oils the massage therapist uses will be great for soothing the sunburn. If you’re sunburn is in a specific area, the therapist can avoid the area all together.
2. The massage will help improve circulation to the burned area. The gentle pressure will help to get blood flowing.
3. To take care of a sunburn at home, he first step is to take a cold shower or apply a cool compress to the burned area. For pain, take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or aspirin. If blisters appear, try not to pop them as this can cause an infection.
4. You can apply a moisturizer or aloe vera gel to the burned area to keep the area moisturized and to minimize inflammation as the burn heals. Make sure to drink plenty of water as sunburns can leave you dehydrated.
Of course, there are severe sunburns that are too sensitive to be touched and need time to heal. If you are not sure whether you are ready to have a massage, talk to the massage therapist before you cancel your appointment. There may be options to work around the affected areas or variations that could still be beneficial. Even for mild sunburns, let your therapist know about your skin condition and whether the sunburn is still tender.
