What is stone massage?

Stone massage is comforting and healing massage, using stones of varying sizes and weights. They are settled comfortably in your body contours on areas that tend to hold tension. These might include the back muscles, abdomen, and face. Oiled stones are used in long flowing strokes to relax the whole body.

Massage with smooth, heated stones is a nurturing experience beyond compare. Imagine relaxing, lying back on a sun-warmed pebble beach and totally letting go with the calming and nurturing touch of massage.

Hot and cold?

"Hot stone massage" may be a more familiar term, but you may be surprised to learn that stones ranging from cool to refreshingly cold may also be part of your treatment. Alternating cold and hot stones can increase circulation and reduce pain even more powerfully than heat or cold by themselves. Cold stones may be used to reduce inflammation and pain in a localized area, such as a chronically tight shoulder muscle. Massage strokes with oiled cold stones can help you relax and feel invigorated at the same time. Something like breathing fresh mountain air perhaps!

What is a session like?

A stone massage session will usually last an hour or more. Stones may be placed both under and on top of your body. They are usually set on the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine), on or under the back, in each hand, between the toes, on the abdomen and chest, under the shoulder muscles and the neck. Small stones may be placed on your forehead.

With stationary, warm stones in place, hot stones may be used as a massage tool in a long gliding stroke to allow your muscles... from head to toe... to completely relax. You may fall asleep. If time allows, a period of quiet rest following the massage will help you get the most out of this deeply nurturing experience.
